Another Mode-S Hex Code Mystery Mid Atlantic

Photo courtesy of Aviation Week and Dean Muskett

Seems like a lot some of my readers love a good mystery and many of you have Mode-S capability. So here is one to watch for in the mid-Atlantic area.

Have hex code AE5D19 and he is signing a Mode-S c/s of H15. Anybody gets anything positive, please drop me a note at the email in the masthead.

Wanna Know If A New DPRK Missile Test Is About To Take Place? Look For This U.S. Aircraft Online…

You can monitor online the U.S. RC-135S Cobra Ball aircraft used to track ballistic missiles reentry vehicles and warheads during the final phase of flight.

Early in the morning on Jul 4, North Korea successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time.
The ICBM, referred to as Hwasong-14, reached a height of 2,802 kilometers, according to the state-run Korea Central Television (KCTV). The missile was launched from Panghyon, in North Pyongan province, and flew into waters east of the Korean Peninsula after traveling for about 930 kilometers.
The latest missile launch, as well as the previous ones, was almost certainly monitored by the U.S. Forces deployed to the region, using a variety of aerial, ground-based, sea-going assets.
The U.S. Air Force relies on its small contingent of RC-135S Cobra Ball missile tracking aircraft. Based at Offutt Air Force Base, outside Omaha, Nebraska, and  flown by the 45th Reconnaissance Squadron, these intelligence gathering aircraft are often deployed where needed to track ballistic missiles reentry vehicles and warheads during the final phase of flight. The aircraft is equipped with a powerful radar array on the starboard side of the fuselage, just aft of the cockpit. Several optical quality windows are mounted on the starboard side as well, allowing infrared and visible spectrum cameras to record the warheads during their final moments of flight. A distinctive feature of the Cobra Ball is the black low-glare paint used on the starboard wing, to improve image quality and prevent glare during photography.
Unsurprisingly, two Cobra Ball aircraft  (61-2662 and 61-2663) are currently deployed to Yokota Air Base, Japan, from where it is launched when there are signs of an imminent North Korean test. What is far more surprising is the fact that, in spite of their important role, RC-135S aircraft are among the military planes that can be tracked online by exploiting the signals broadcast by their Mode S/ADS-B transponders.
By observing the activities of the RC-135S in Japan you may have a pretty clear idea of what is happening or about to happen in North Korea. For instance, last night, the fact that the Cobra Ball was airborne from Yokota might suggest that the U.S. intelligence had detected activities at the launch site and was preparing to monitor the test. This is the reason why I tweeted the following (later confirmed by the news of the ICBM test):
And that was not the first time. Just a coincidence? Most probably not, considered that the Cobra Ball does not fly that much and almost all sorties tracked online in Japan coincided with North Korea’s tests.
Here are some examples:
On Apr. 15, North Korea test-fired an unidentified land-based missile from the naval base in Sinpo. An RC-135S was flying over Japan:

On May 13, North Korea test-fired an intermediate range ballistic missile, from a test site on the country’s West Coast. That launch reached a then-record altitude of around 2,100 kilometers (1,300 miles) and a Cobra Ball was airborne to watch and collect data:

On Jun. 20, a Cobra Ball and WC-135 Constant Phoenix “nuclear sniffer” flew over Japan. It was later unveiled that the spy satellites had detected new activity at the North Korean nuclear test site.

So, if you want to know when Kim Jong Un is preparing for a new test, you may try to look for a Cobra Ball or Constant Phoenix airborne over Japan on ADSBexchange or simply follow some of the Twitter accounts who constantly track such aircraft, such as our friend @CivMilAir who provided us with most of the updates on the RC-135 and WC-135 flights in the area.

"The Hex Holes" -- Latest List Unknown Mode-S Addresses - 1 Dec 2015 Update

For years in my former Monitoring Times Milcom column, I documented 225-400 MHz UHF spectrum holes (see page above for latest spectrum hole).

Now I have discovered what appears to be holes in DoD Mode-S addresses. These aircraft are flying, but there never seems to be any tie-ups. One can speculate that they are covert aircraft, sensitive mission aircraft, temp mission addresses, aerial refueling tankers on SpecOps missions, etc. Some of the addresses in and around the addresses below have been tie-up with SpecOps aircraft, and FEST aircraft. Bottom line: these Mode-S addresses are ones to watch real close. I will call this list from now on the "Hex Hole" list. Catchy huh!

In future ipdates to this blog I will share those Mode-S address "hex holes"  below that have been discovered on our Btown box and from others that have Mode-S boxes worldwide. If you discover a tie up for any of these Mode-S addresses or you have a new "hex hole" you want to share, please drop us an email at the address in the masthead. For right now please limit these "hex holes" to the US Military/Government series of hex codes (roughly between ADFC60 and prior to AFFFF0).

Latest Hex Hole List 1 Dec 2015

Here is the latest "hex hole" list that I have in my database. Some of these may be new aircraft series just now testing or coming off the production line and some may be, well let's just say -- we don't know. Any tie ups would be sincerely appreciated.

New Summer 2017 International Shortwave Broadcast Guide Now Available

Teak Publishing is pleased to announce the release of the Summer 2017 International Shortwave Broadcast Guide (ISWBG) electronic book by Amazon bestselling author Gayle Van Horn, W4GVH. This all important semi-annual information resource is your electronic guide to the world of shortwave radio listening.

The release of this book is very timely for international radio monitors given the recent outbreak of tensions in the world hotspots of Eastern Europe, Middle East, East Asia and the Korean Peninsula.

Shortwave radio listeners are routinely entertained with unique perspectives to events, music, culture, history, and news from other countries that you won’t see or hear on your local or national broadcast channels. Shortwave radio broadcast aren’t restricted by country borders or oceans, and can propagate thousands of miles, reaching millions of listeners worldwide, in over 300 different languages and dialects. These worldwide transmissions are monitored on internationally assigned radio frequencies between 1700 kHz and 30 MHz.

There are even broadcasts from the dark side, transmitted from broadcasters known as clandestine or clanny stations. Clandestine broadcasters are wrapped in mystery and intrigue, and they usually exist to bring about some sort of political change to the country they are targeting. Programming may largely be half-truths or sometimes even outright lies, but it is essentially propaganda for their cause.

Listeners who live in the United States can easily hear shortwave broadcast stations from Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, New Zealand, North/South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, and many other counties if you have an inexpensive shortwave radio receiver, and you know when and where to listen!

If you want to get in on the action, then this Amazon electronic book is your ticket the travel the world via radio. The ISWBG is our exclusive 24-hour station/frequency guide to “all” of the known longwave, selected mediumwave and shortwave radio stations currently broadcasting at time of publication. This unique radio hobby resource is the “only” radio hobby publication that has by-hour station schedules that include all language services, frequencies and world target areas.

New in this eighth edition of the ISWBG is an Surfing the Shortwave Radio Bands without a Radio by senior radio monitor Larry Van Horn Summertime Listening on Shortwave, by shortwave program specialist Fred Waterer, and a feature very timely feature - When News Breaks: Getting Your News from the Front Lines through streaming media by Loyd Van Horn.

There is also an expanded special feature on Who’s Who in the shortwave radio spectrum by former Monitoring Times editor and feature writer Larry Van Horn N5FPW. This story covers services and frequencies outside the regular broadcast and amateur radio bands, and includes our new, exclusive Hot HF 1000+ non-broadcast frequency list. The final feature article in this edition is Getting Started in Shortwave Radio, a primer, by Spectrum Monitor managing editor Ken Reitz KS4ZR.

Also included in this edition is increased frequency and station coverage of longwave broadcasters, selected medium wave broadcast frequencies used by international broadcasters, all known international standard time and frequency stations transmitting worldwide, and some selected spy numbers broadcasts.

Air Force Says Tornado Damaged Two “Doomsday” 747s

Story by Tara Copp, Stars and  Stripes

A tornado that struck in Omaha, Nebraska last  week damaged two of the “Doomsday” 747 aircraft that serve as the national  command center for the United States in case of a military attack, the Air Force  said Friday.

Offutt AFB, home to the nation’s four E-4B aircraft, was hit  by the tornado on June 16. The planes are used by the Secretary of Defense and  Secretary of State for international visits and maintain vital communications —  including those with the country’s nuclear missile silos and nuclear-powered
submarines — in case of an attack.

Ten aircraft, including the two 747s,  were damaged by the tornado, said Capt. Mark Graff, an Air Force spokesman. He  said the other two 747s were not damaged by the tornado and can still be used as the national airborne operations center.

Of the base’s eight RC-135  reconnaissance aircraft, seven had minor damage, Graff said. Six of the damaged  planes have been returned to flight status, he said.

The tornado was  fast-moving, said Col. Pat Ryder, an Air Force spokesman. “They attempted to  hangar as many [planes] as they could. Obviously, some were damaged.”

Ryder said the primary E-4B — the one that is always on alert  status — was not affected and that the Air Force is still assessing the level of  damage to the two other 747s. The tornado also damaged buildings and trees on the Nebraska air base.

The Air Force is Reactivating The Gigantic Planes

By , Popular Mechanics

The C-5 Galaxy was originally introduced in the late 1960s as a strategic airlifter able to cross entire oceans without refueling. The C-5 is the largest airlifter built by the United States, 65 feet high and with a wingspan of 247 feet. It can carry a maximum of 135 tons of cargo. With a combat load of sixty tons of cargo, the C-5M can fly from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to Incirlik Air Force Base, Turkey nonstop without refueling. According to the Air Force, it can fly 7,000 miles without cargo.

Budget cuts immediately sidelined a dozen C-5Ms, and the Air Force's fleet of non-upgraded C-5A/B/C Galaxies and Super Galaxies shrank from 112 to just 56 planes The Air Force plans to bring back two Super Galaxies a year over four years.

What's prompting the return of the giant planes? As the Pentagon reorients to the Asia-Pacific, it faces the prospect of flying long distances without refueling. At a March 31 event attended by reporters and congressional representatives, the head of the Air Force's Air Mobility Command claimed that the C-5 is the only airlifter that can make the trip non-stop from the continental United States, in this case Travis Air Force Base in California, to Yokota Air Base in Japan, just outside Tokyo.
